Understanding VR, AR, and MR
While often used interchangeably, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) are distinct technologies. VR completely immerses the user in a digital environment, cutting off the physical world. AR overlays digital information onto the real world, like Pokmon GO or head-up displays in cars. MR, often considered an advanced form of AR, allows digital and physical objects to coexist and interact in real-time. For example, a virtual character in MR could 'hide' behind your actual couch. As headsets like the Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro gain popularity, the lines between these technologies are blurring, leading to what is often referred to as 'Extended Reality' (XR).
