Meta Quest 4S: The Next Affordable Mixed Reality King?

Following the massive success of the Quest 3s, industry insiders are already pointing toward a successor: the Meta Quest 4S. Leaked internal documents suggest that Meta is aiming to solidify its dominance in the mainstream market by offering a "lite" version of the upcoming Quest 4 that doesn't compromise on the core mixed reality experience. The goal is to make high-quality passthrough and spatial computing accessible to an even broader audience as we head into late 2026.

The rumored specifications for the Quest 4S include the latest Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 3 chipset, which would provide a significant boost in processing power and AI capabilities over the current generation. While it may retain the more affordable Fresnel lenses of its predecessors to keep costs down, the passthrough cameras are expected to receive a major upgrade to 12-megapixels, providing a much clearer and more color-accurate view of the physical world for MR applications.

One of the most interesting rumors is the inclusion of "Basic Eye Tracking" for foveated rendering. By including simplified eye-tracking sensors, Meta could significantly improve the headset's performance and battery life by only rendering the center of the user's vision at full resolution. This would allow the Quest 4S to run much more complex games and apps than its price point would normally suggest, bridging the gap between entry-level and premium hardware.

As Meta continues to open up its Horizon OS to third-party manufacturers, the Quest 4S is seen as a crucial "reference device" that sets the standard for affordable spatial computing. If the rumors are true, the Quest 4S could be the device that finally pushes mixed reality into the true mass market, making virtual and augmented experiences a daily reality for millions more people. We expect an official announcement during Meta Connect 2026.
